The ICS Kabaddi cup 2016, held in the Mosque Square, started off at 9am with the registration of teams and the briefing of rules and regulations to all participating teams. There were 7 teams that participated in the tournament, which consisted of 3 teams from MMU Cyberjaya and 4 teams from our very own Malacca campus.
The teams from Cyberjaya were Cyber A, Cyber B and Cyber C. On the other hand, the 4 teams from our campus were Theri Honduras, Thunderz, Jay Rockerz and Venom FC. The tournament was oversaw by a professional referee to ensure that the game went on smoothly and in a professional manner.
The event officially commenced around 11am by the emcees Dhaniyaa Basil and Pugalzhetha Elangovan, who spoke in both Tamil and English. The director of the ICS Kabaddi Cup 2016, Mr Vimal Raju was then called upon the stage to present his welcoming speech to all participants and spectators gathered at the venue.
The director’s speech was then followed by the oath recitation ceremony which was lead by Mr Giri Kumar, where all the players declared to uphold the values of tradition in the spirit of sportsmanship.
The first match began at 11.30am which was between Theri Honduras and MMU Cyber C.
The day went on with the teams playing against each other and spectators cheering for their favourite players. During the matches, several players faced injuries and credits has to be given to the event crew for always being there to help out those who were injured.
In what felt like a blink of an eye, the tournament was almost over and Cyber A and Theri Honduras managed to get into the finals. The finals was a must watch match as both the teams who have a history of rivalry fought hard to be crowned as champions. After a tough fight, Cyber A managed to win the 1st place, putting Theri Honduras in 2nd place and Thunderz in 3rd place. Theri Honduras although in 2nd place, managed to win our hearts as the played well although 2 of their players were forced to step out due to injuries, including their team captain.
The closing ceremony began around 5pm and was joined by MIC Melaka State Youth Leader, Mr Nadarajah, Member of Youth Parliament, Mr Kabilan Manikvelu and MIC Malacca State Youth Secretary, Mr Selvaraja.
The ceremony began with the speech of Mr Harvind Rajagopal, the Vice President of ICS, who congratulated Cyber A for their victory. He also emphasized the importance of sportsmanship and gave credits to Mr Vimal, the director of the event, who managed to pull off the event successfully in just 2 weeks.
Following his speech, a token of appreciation was awarded to the VIPs present. The director of the event then presented certificates and hampers to all participating teams.
During the award ceremony, Thunderz, who were in 3rd place received their medals from Mr Kabilan while Cyber A and Theri Honduras who won the 1st and 2nd place respectively were awarded by Mr Nadarajah.
Special awards were also presented to Sree Ram from Cyber A, as the best player, Vimal Subramaniam from Theri Honduras, as the best raider and Vimal Raju from Thunderz, as the best defender.
From the short interview, Vimal Raju, the event director, he replied:
“First and foremost, I would like to thank all my committee members who really helped to make the event successful. The output of the event was really satisfying as everything went on as planned. I would also like to express my gratitude to all the participating teams and to the editorial squad for covering the event.”
