14TH January 2017 marked a memorable and historical day for MMU Editorial Squad as for the very first time since the formation of the club in the year 14/15, we have finally organized our very own dinner function in Main Hall, the Buzz Popular Choice Awards 2017 (BPCA). Although this is the 2nd time BPCA is organized, the scale of the event is increased from the previous year where the awards ceremony was held in Sri Ruby inside the Counseling Unit. The initiative behind the creation of BPCA is to provide another platform to reward and acknowledge clubs and societies and their events via popular choice by voting by students of MMU Melaka, the voting was cast online on MMUES official website;
The event kick started around 8.15pm and it was hosted by 3 charismatic emcees, Mr Edwin Lim, Mr Daven Lok and Ms Tan Wye Nye. Honourable VIPs present that night were Mr Jee Kian Siong, advisor of MMUES; Dr Gerald Goh, Deputy Dean of FOB; Mr Izwan, Assistant Manager and representative of STAD; Mr Jason Teo, President of SRC accompanied with the event director, Mr Daniel Saw and MMUES President. Mr Aaron Lim.
The flow began by a few inspiring and warming speeches from Mr Jee, the club advisor, Mr Aaron Lim and the director himself, Mr Daniel Saw. At this stage, the main hall had a full house with 17 tables sold and over 150 attendees from various clubs and societies showing their unanimous support to the event and the future awards recipients.
Moving on, the first performance of the night was a freestyle basketball performance. Right after the first performance, dinner commences and the dishes were already prepared on each table thus the flow was neat as there was no queue for food. As the attendees enjoyed the dinner, the atmosphere became serene with a band performing on stage. One of the spectacular performance and common favourite was when the band performed a wonderful cover of Beat It by Michael Jackson.
The flow of the event was organised sessions by sessions at which 1 session, around 2 or 3 awards will be given and the winners announced by the VIPs and other presenters who were amongst the VIPs, the staff of MMU, SRC Members, Editorial Squad vice presidents and the director of the night. One of the unique features of BPCA is that the awards recipients (1 representative) were given 1 minute for a victory speech after receiving the trophy.
For the earlier sessions, the first award winner announced was for the ‘UNITY AWARD’ the idea behind this award is which event that MMU students feel that during the organisation, preparation and on the actual day, the event and the committees have portrayed unity and outstanding teamwork. The winner of this award was ‘A TOUCH OF SYMPHONY- TIME TRAVELLER hosted and organized by the Chinese Orchestra Society (COS).
The following awards were the ‘JERSEY AWARD’ which will be awarded to the best sports club. Badminton club emerged as the students’ top choice. Next the ‘FIGHT CLUB AWARD’, the title was given to Taekwondo Society.
After the first session, the crowd was further entertained by an all-girls K-Pop dancing performance. The performance was most certainly mesmerizing and the crowd had their full attention on stage. During the intervals, guests were flocking at the photo booth at the back of Main Hall taking group pictures with their fellow club committees and also awards recipients with their achievements.
The second session begun and the first award was the ‘HALO AWARD’, in simpler words it will be won by the noblest club or event. The proud recipient of this award was the Christian Society and they won this award twice in a row since last BPCA. Second award would be ‘KELAB HAVOC AWARD’ which will go to the loudest and most passionate club. The winner was none other than the Indian Cultural Society (ICS). ICS high committee members marched on stage with a colour coded green tie to proudly show their powerful identity as one of the biggest giants in MMU. The following award would be ‘FAKULTI HAVOC AWARD’ and the title this year was obtained by a new champion, the Faculty of Business who succeeded the title from Faculty of Law from last year’s BPCA. Dr Gerald, the Deputy Dean of FOB representing the huge family of FOB received the trophy.
3rd session continued with the presentation of the ‘WOOHOO! AWARD’. This award goes to the club or society that held the most fun activity. The proud winner goes to SURVIVAL GAMES: CYBER HAS FALLEN by Business Society who organized this wonderful event in MMU Cyberjaya Campus. The second award of this session was the ‘HELPING HAND AWARD’, the popular choice for the recipient of award would be the Students’ Representative Council who also received this award for the second time. Mr Jason Teo, the President of SRC went up stage to receive the trophy and thanked all students for their support to the council. The last award for the session would be the ‘KEPOHCHI AWARD’ the requirement for this award would be the club/society has successfully create plenty of presence in campus and people are aware of their presence, the club and their events. The recipient of this award was MILE.
During the intervals, a captivating magic performance kept the audience in awe. Guests and attendees too were getting more and more excited as the flow at the photo booth were quite heavy. Besides that, throughout the event and in between the prior sessions, lucky draw prizes were given out and it were tickets to the ‘Melaka Thousand Tales of Adventure’ a simulated indoor adventure. This organization turns out to be one of the main sponsors of BPCA. The lucky winners obtained 2 tickets to try out this latest attraction in town. The emcees were warm and were interacting with the crowd, besides usual conversations, they also prepared a simple game for all the tables to compete.
Moving closer to the ending, the last awards session is reserved for the top 3 and most distinguished awards for the night. They are the ‘#BPCA AWARD’, ‘RISING STAR AWARD’ and ‘#BUZZ AWARD’.
#BPCA Award will go to the best of the best event organized, this award is received by none other than ’30 HOUR FAMINE’ by Golden Key Society. The aim of this event is to create awareness on famine faced by many countries around the globe and also for a charitable purpose. As the name says it all, the participants and committees together with other students around the nation gathered together and fast for 30 hour straight. The noble cause of this event has certainly been rewarded and acknowledged tonight.
Next, the Rising Star Award, the requirement would be a club/society in the students’ perspective have improved themselves a lot since the previous terms and the improvements is notable making the club/society to stand out amongst the others. The proud winner was CHINESE ORCHESTRA SOCIETY (COS). COS throughout this term has been actively organizing musical based concerts and the support and patronage they had in all their events were great too. Hence, there can be no doubt that the students of MMU voted COS to win this award. This was also the 2nd award received by COS during the night.
Finally, main award of the night, ‘#BUZZ AWARD’, which will be won by the club that has been voted to be the best club/society in MMU Melaka. A new figure emerged to be the proud and honoured recipient of this distinguished award and that was E-Games Club. Throughout the current term, E-Games club conducted many e-games events in campus where they provided students top notch hardware for passed byers to indulge themselves to play. Besides top quality PCs and other hardware, E-Games managed to get huge sponsors from reputable companies like Alienware and MSI to sponsor their equipment for the event. Besides that, E-Games Club also conducted several gaming tournaments such as DOTA Competitions. Thus, since E-Games have supplied one of the highest demands in our society which is online gaming and earned the support from students. The President of E-Games, Mr Alex gave the victory speech and together with his team they marched down as a champion of BPCA.
The night concluded around 11 p.m but the crowd doesn’t seem to subside as photo taking sessions was still taking place.
