The Multimedia University Law Society held their annual law seminar on 20th August 2016. The event took place in CLC 0001, beginning at 8.30 am and going on till 1.00pm. The theme for this year’s topic of discussion was on the Conundrum of Human Trafficking of Women and Children in the 21st Century.
The keynote speaker was Prof. Dato’ Dr. Aishah Bidin, Commissioner of the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (SUHAKAM). The other highly esteemed speakers that were invited are, Dato’ M.Ramachelvam, the chairperson of the Bar Council Migrants, Refugees and Immigration Affairs Committee, and Ms. Mathilde Crepin, an Associate Refugee Status Determination Officer of UNHCR.
The director being, David Cheong Ye Kai, showed genuine passion in organizing this time honoured event, as it is the humblest of endeavours to shed light on this issue of Human Trafficking. Present also was the president of the law society, Vincent Liew, to bare witness to the fruits of his high committees endeavours.
The seminar itself is a medium through which its attendees are made aware of the current problems that plague our world. Human trafficking is the ever present situation that needs to be addressed but is hardly acknowledged by certain members of society. The occurrences that lead up to said trafficking are very real and is an undeniable key factor in considering the safety of our community. The actual trafficking serves as the middleman for which victims of kidnapping, poverty and desperation are “transported” and used for other inhumane purposes.
Inhuman and against the very essence of ethicality, human trade must be placed under the spotlight, to be dissected to its bare organs for a better understanding as to why it exists. The speakers provided crucial information as to what it is, and what is being done to help remedy the situation. Ms. Mathilde Crepin addressed the victims specifically and gave a detailed and clear idea as to whom may be considered a refugee and the physiological factors that still plague their minds.
The event was, to say the least, informative. It served as a platform for eager young minds to try and ascertain the complications that exist in this world of ours.
