On the 12th to 13th of March, a handful of MMU students from the MMU Judo Club have been selected to represent Melaka in the National Judo Championship held in Kuala Nerus, Terengganu. The National Judo Championships (NJC), now in its 54th installment, is an annual event organized by the Malaysia Judo Federation (MJF) to serve as a platform to showcase the best Judo athletes from the states in Malaysia. The NJC often doubles as a selection, where winners of respective categories stand a chance to represent Malaysia in the SEA Games.
This year, 10 contingents from all over Malaysia travelled to Terengganu to compete to be the Champion for their respective events. The teams include Terengganu, Melaka, Sarawak, Pulau Pinang, Negeri Sembilan, WP Kuala Lumpur, Angkatan Tentera Malaysia (Perak), Sekolah Sukan Tunku Mahkota Ismail (Johor), Persatuan Judo Malaysia (Selangor) and SMK Seri Bintang Utara (Kuala Lumpur).
In Judo competitions, there are two main categories, namely 'Kata' and 'Shiai'. Competitors in the 'Kata' category are required to perform a series of throws and techniques known as the Nage-No-Kata (commonly for men) and the Ju-No-Kata (commonly for women). The winners for this performance-based category are chosen by best finesse, technique and execution of Judo moves.
In the 'Shiai' category, competitors are separated by weight class and engage in combat to determine the winner. A winner is decided by securing an 'Ippon' (full point) by throws or submission.
We are proud to announce that the participants from MMU have managed to bring back 2 gold medals for the Nage-No-Kata and Ju-No-Kata categories and 1 bronze medal for the Men's -100kg category. The gold medalists are Teoh Che Chong and Lai Guo Yao for the Nage-No-Kata (male) category as well as Wedle Teo Hwee Ik for the Ju-No-Kata (female) category. Another participant, Lee Wei Xiong, brought back a Bronze Medal for the Men’s- 100kg category.
Congratulations to all the winners!
