What’s gonna work? Teamwork! Odd that a wonder pets quote would apply here but that’s exactly what happened last weekend when the MMU Student Representative Council (SRC) organized a Gotong-Royong Campaign 4.0 in collaboration with the representatives of Taman Kerjasama and the Ministry of Health. The event’s main purpose was to annihilate the breeding of Aedes mosquitoes. The event targeted students of MMU. It also helped to raise awareness on the dangers of Aedes mosquitoes which could possibly lead to Dengue Fever. The director for the event was Angel Goh Khai Feung who is also the secretary of SRC, assisted by Tan Cheng Kiat, an executive officer for the Student Academic and Education Division of SRC. The emcees for the day were Aaron Lim Li Peng and Anne Malar Joseph.
The event took place on the morning of Saturday. Fortunately, the weather was favorable as it wasn’t too hot nor was it raining. Registration began at 7.30 a.m. and the turnout was great. The students were divided into 10 different groups at random. Each group was led by a member of SRC and they were assisted by a Rakan Exco ( REX ) member . Grouping the students randomly allowed them to meet new friends. By 8.15 a.m. the students walked together to the location of the event which was at Taman Kerjasama. They were assisted by traffic police as well as the security team. Once all the students reached the hall at Taman Kerjasama. Upon arrival, the participants and committees got together to do a warm up session led by Ahmed Owaidah who is the 2nd vice president of SRC.
The event then continued with speeches by the director of Gotong Royong 4.0 , Angel Goh .The next speech was given by Lee Shoue Jie, vice president of SRC followed by Mr. Fazli Sharil ,Representative of campus director of Multimedia University. The next two speeches were given by the VIPs Tuan Haji Mohd Arif Bin Yusa ,Chairman of Jawatankuasa Penyelaras Pembangunan DUN Ayer Keroh Melaka and Tan Sri Haji Mohd Ali Bin Mohd Rustam, Chairman of Perbadanaan Usahawan Nasional Berhad. Through the speeches given , the participants and committees were informed that there were many cases of Dengue fever around Melaka but thankfully no Dengue cases were reported by Taman Kerjasama. Refreshments of bread and mineral water were served to give the students energy to take part in the gotong royong.
At 9.45, the participants moved in their groups to the respective road. The residents of Taman Kerjasama were very helpful as they offered to help the participants . The committees of Gotong royong 4.0 drove around and gave participants supply of mineral water. The main objective was to check out for potential breeding places of the Aedes mosquitoes for example stagnant water in flowers pots and pails. The participants also picked up rubbish and recyclable items. By 10.45, most of the groups were done and they gathered back at the hall for the closing ceremony . The director, Angel Goh and her assistant director of Gotong Royong 4.0 , Tan Cheng Kiat gave a closing speech by showing their appreciation to the participants . Everyone was then given lunch which was provided by the representatives of Taman Kerjasama. The event ended with good memories and I believe many of the participants and committees were glad to have been able to give back to the society. All in all the event was a successful one and it truly did serve a great purpose. Reinforcing in fact the saying that teamwork makes the dream work.
