Writing about one’s own hometown is harder than you think. Sure that notion may seem as sign of pure laziness to some (eg. my beloved editor of whom I describe with the adjective ‘beloved’ so as to make sure this example makes it into publication), but really, how does one write about their hometown without the reader getting bored from the first sentence? Go ahead and try to think of something to write about your hometown. There may be tons of things that may seem make your hometown look somewhat happening but sometimes the more you think about it, the less interesting its attractions appear. Maybe this is not true for all people, maybe this is only true for my own state, maybe this writer just has attention problems. Yours truly got bored just from looking at the topic given. I mean really, my hometown?
This writer calls the state of Melaka home. The name of the town in Melaka is conveniently named ‘Melaka town(Melaka Raya)’. This writer does not see this as a reflection of the creativity (or lack of it) of the Melakan community, nor does it mean that Melakans were too lazy to even come up with a proper name. It's just that Melaka is such a perfect name so why not just use it right? #validexcuse . Anyway, no one is really sure if the state was named after the town or town named after the state, or both named after the tree, or mouse deer, or the Strait of Melaka which may have been named after the town instead. Legend, however has it that it was the Melaka tree that gave it its name.
Undoubtedly, Melaka has the reputation of being a boring town. While it is known for all its historical attractions and good food, many also see it as being the kind of place that has passed its peak of glory a couple of decades ago. Sure once upon a time it was THE place to be in the South East Asian region, but these days, developments in the town hardly hold a candle to other thriving cities that came only much later such as Kuala Lumpur, Penang or Johor Bahru.
However, despite being a somewhat boring township, this writer is also pretty sure that Melaka is one of the most badass towns in Malaysia.
Here are 3 reasons why,
1. Badass beginning
As the legend goes, once upon a time, Parameswara was out hunting at a place called Bertam. While resting under a melaka tree, one of his dogs cornered a mousedeer or “Sang Kancil“ in malay. In retaliation, the mouse deer kicked the dog on its nose. Parameswara was so impressed by the mousedeer’s courage Parameswara decided to build his empire on that sacred land named after the tree under which he was sitting.
2. Badass food
It is an undisputed fact that Melaka has some of the best food around.
3. Badass slogan
Now, I don’t know bout you, but thats probably one of the most badass slogans ever used for any state thingy. Sure sure it applies to the whole state but hey, that means its also applicable to the town. And its badass, that’s all that matters.
So yeah, final word of caution, Don’t mess with this Melakan B-)
