A zero tolerance policy is one which imposes strict punishment for infractions of a stated rule, with the intention of eliminating undesirable conduct. President Trump’s zero tolerance policy calls for the prosecution of all individuals who illegally enter the United States. For a country mainly made up of immigrants, this new law has caused an outrage due to its cruel treatment of the refugees. This policy has the effect of separating parents from their children when they enter the country together, because parents are referred for prosecution and the children are placed in the custody of a sponsor, such as a relative or foster home, or held in a shelter. Activists from all around America are protesting against this issue and trying to seek justice for the innocent children. Many protesters have been having numerous strikes against the Immigration and Customs Enforcement of America or better known as ICE to stop their raids and unify families.
Once they have been apprehended by the Border Patrol, the refugees will be taken to a detention center known as Ursula (located a few miles away the US and Mexico border). Just like the evil character, Ursula from the Little Mermaid, the detention center has become a complete nightmare to the children that have been separated from their families. Although claimed to be kept in proper condition, the reality at this detention center is quite contrary. It is a large cage inside held dozens of young boys and teenagers without their families, some of whom looked as young as 5. A few slept on green mats with silver Mylar blankets pulled tightly around them. A few water bottles and bags of chips lay strewn around. Otherwise, the cages were bare, without toys or books. Separate areas held groups of girls; men and women alone; and mothers and fathers with their children. The overhead lights never go off. The conditions there is as cruel as it sounds, according to the few of many reporters that were allowed to enter. Many people of the US are protesting against this cruel treatment and it has now become an International issue.
One of the most dominating issue that caused a national uproar was that children, as young as 3 years were required to appear in court to proceed their own deportation proceedings. The more than 2,000 children probably will need to deal with court proceedings even as they grapple with the trauma of being taken from their parents. A federal judge commanded the White House last week to reunify families within 14 days if the child is under 5 and 30 days if the child is older. The Justice Department has not indicated whether it will appeal. Attorneys who are involved in the cases said it’s unclear how the judge’s order will work in practice and when and how it could take effect..To have toddlers to managing their legal conflicts without a legal guardian is as insane as it sounds. Immigration attorneys from all around the US have been flying over to Texas to aid the children in their proceedings. Many officials have voiced out their worries on how this will take on in the near future.
Many people in the US have been protesting against this issue and are striving for fairness and justice for these innocent children. If this policy prolongs, it may result in a long term suffering and trauma. This policy is vicious and heartless. The United Nations human rights office has also called for an end to the Trump administration’s practice that separates children and parents, saying that using immigration detention and family separation "as a deterrent runs counter to human rights standards and principles”. The United States’ current foreign policy has caused it to become increasingly isolated. Some countries are even considering to diminishing their association with America due President Trump’s harsh policies. Resulting from the current America’s foreign policy, other superpowers are taking over as allies, for example; China sees a chance to capitalize on the fear and confusion and emerge as the sober-minded power in the region. Allies in the European Union are unsure of including US in any formations and trade partnerships in Asia are being formed without the involvement of the US. The more this prolongs, the more it will effect the United States of America.
